Yellowstone National Park

Rhynie Chert analogues: Yellowstone National Park, WY.

During the Summers of 1999 and 2000, I had the opportunity to do fieldwork in a modern geothermally active area. This was important as it helped me understand the flora, fauna, structures and textures seen in an ancient fossil hot spring deposit, the Rhynie Chert.

Conditions in the geysers basins were pretty good, but wind blown smoke from the various forest fires caused a few watery eyes!

Old Faithful Geyser doesn't stop when the tourist coaches leave...this image was taken of an eruption as the sun set.
